So You Want to Get Scuba Certified? Here's How It Works
Christie Davis Sep 08, 2026
Maybe you watched a documentary. Maybe a friend came back from a trip glowing. Maybe you've just always wondered what it's like down there.
Whatever got you here, getting certified is a lot more doable than most people think. Here's what to expect.
What "certified" actually means
A scuba certification is your proof that you've been trained to dive safely. Without it, dive shops won't fill your tank or take you out on a boat. With it, you and a buddy are free to explore on your own, within the limits of your training.
At Astoria Scuba, you'll earn a NAUI Scuba Diver certification. NAUI is one of the major training agencies, and your card is recognized around the world.
Who can sign up
You need to be at least 12 years old and in good physical condition. You'll also need to be comfortable in the water. Not sure if you're ready? Call us and we'll talk it through.
How the class works
The course has three parts:
- Classroom learning: With NAUI e-Learning, you do the academics from your own computer, on your own schedule.
- Pool time: This is where you learn the skills, like clearing your mask and breathing from your regulator, in calm water with your instructor right beside you.
- Open water dives: You finish with a minimum of six dives, where you put it all together.
Your instructor will teach you about your equipment, the science of diving, responsible diving habits, and the environment you'll be exploring.
What it costs
The Open Water Scuba Diver course at Astoria Scuba starts at $725. If you want to add Nitrox, that's an extra $50. Nitrox is a breathing gas mix that can give you longer bottom time, and it's a popular add-on for new divers.
What to bring
Honestly, not much. Sign up, grab your bathing suit, and get ready to have fun. Come to us with questions about gear and we'll help you sort out what you need and when.
Not sure yet?
If you want to try before you commit, our Introduction to Scuba Diving program lets you take your first breaths underwater in a pool or confined water. No certification, no pressure.
